Hello! Another class event that took place last year was a genre book tasting. I have done different versions of 'book tastings' in the past; namely, a music one, and an artist one, which I hope to share one day in the future. They were great, the students loved them! This past year I have been teaching ESOL Literature courses, so we did a real book tasting with actual books, and I used it to introduce literary genres. On their menus (which I got for free on TPT and slightly edited), students had to try at least four different genres plus a choice fifth genre. They reflected on their favorite book sampling on a paper napkin. I had four tables with about two-three genre definition signs at each. I put out as many books as I could find for each, and printed example stories and poems, as well. My goal was for them to learn the terms for different types of literature (I put those terms on the walls afterward as posters), experience works of writing outside of their comfort genres, explore diverse author tones/moods as well as writing styles and structures, and to hopefully grow an appreciation for other genres (maybe even discover a new favorite story that would further encourage a love for reading!). Some of the books were in Spanish, most were in English, and they had the option of using their phones to translate if needed (since I taught multi-level classes).
