DIY Ringmaster Costume

I made this Ringmaster costume last fall for my grandmother's circus-themed birthday party. It actually looks like a costume from The Greatest Showman. I threw it together at the last minute (well, mostly glued it to be exact), so it's super easy to make. Below are 5 simple steps that you can follow to make your own costume:

Step 1.

Take a long-sleeved red shirt and sew on black cuffs around the sleeves. If you don't need the shirt afterward, you could try gluing them instead.

Step 2.

Sew or glue on a white fabric strip in the middle of the shirt.

Step 3.

Sew or glue on black strips on both sides of the white strip. They should flare out at the top and the bottom. Make sure to tuck and glue the edges of everything, especially the black strips, in a way that the rough edges don't show.

Step 4.

For the bow, cut out a large rectangle. Fold the sides so that they meet in the middle. Glue the center, and try to puff out the loops. Fold the edges and glue them so that they don't show. Then wrap a small rectangular piece around the center and glue it in the back. You can now pin the bow on (I just used regular clothespins).

Step 5.

Paint some cardstock gold (unless it's already gold) and cut out three large button-shapes. Hot glue those along one of the black strips, keeping them on one side of the outfit.

My brother already owned the hat from a magic kit, but if you want to create one, here's a tutorial.

You're costume is complete! I didn't get any photos of the process, so I hope the instructions make sense. I never measure, pin or take proper procedures when I sew, so there really is no very particular way to make it.

Enjoy!
