Throughout my childhood, I read lots of classic books. You know, A Christmas Carol, Tom Sawyer, The Secret Garden, The Prince and the Pauper... I could go on and on. But many of my very favorites are not as familiar to people. Although I'm an adult, I still enjoy reading childrens' literature and sometimes classics. In fact, I didn't discover some of these books until my teenage years, and I still adore them. Here's a list of 5 incredible classic books that are not very well known you definitely should read this summer if you haven't yet:
The Oz Series by L. Frank Baum
Did you not that there are fifteen Wizard of OZ books, and the first one, in my opinion, isn't even the best? If you like puns, this is definitely the series for you. It is amusing and hilarious. You can get them all free on Kindle Fire, as well as the other books in this list.
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
I want to know where this book was my whole life and why I only learned about it last year. Like the Oz series, it is interesting, super punny and hilarious! Not to mention the great life lessons and morals it teaches with clever allegories or metaphors. This book will definitely make you smile.
The Princess and the Goblins by George Macdonald
I loved this book as a child, and it was this author who actually inspired C. S. Lewis. This story contains Christian symbolism and has great lessons along with an interesting plot.
The Princess and Curdie by George Macdonald
This is the sequal to the Princess and the Goblins, and I absolutly loved it! I didn't know about it until a few years back, but I like it much better than the first, and I enjoyed the first book a lot. It is an even deeper allegory loaded with symbolism, and involves higher stakes than the first book. It's not exactly a 'thriller', but it is pretty exciting. Definitely read this if you love the first book or the Chronicles of Narnia.
A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
You've probably heard of this book, written by the same author as 'The Secret Garden', but if you haven't read it, you should. I have always enjoyed reading about sweet Sara Crew, her terrible fate, and trials she must face in this lovely riches-to-rags-to-riches tale.
