Here's the desk after I painted it, as promised:
Here's the details:
I bought a gallon of white paint for $10.00, and painted the whole desk except the surface.
(The picture below was taken right after I started painting.)
Then I covered it with a trash bag (after it was dry) and spray-painted it with chalkboard paint. That was it!
